AAWD - 4WD High Performance Torque Vectoring

​

Integrating two hydrostatic torque modulators, controlled directly by two electric valves, into the rear axle as presented below, torque vectoring, needed to improved handling during acceleration and cornering can be realized .

Once again this system will bring the advantage of faster reaction 0.05 s as electro valves  controls directly torque modulation while, at standard discs clutches their actions is slowed down by movement of the piston needed to press the discs.

Actually, knowing that even today, even fighter jets are controlled by electrohydraulic actuators, hydrostatic torque modulators brings repeatability and reaction time of the aircraft control, into the control of the advanced AWD 4WD systems. One such concept, of the AWD4WD, where rear deferential is replaced by two electrically controlled hydrostatic torque modulators is presented by figure below.

Actually this is natural extension of the Basic High Performance AWD-4WD, without torque vectoring presented below

Basic AWD - 4WD High Performance

Standard AWD-4WD solutions are controlled with the clutches. As those clutches are controlled indirectly i.e. electric valves controlled oil flow/pressure needed to move the piston needed to compress  the discs reaction isn't as fast as it can be if electric valves can directly control the torque modulation as it is the case with hydrostatic modulator as it is presented below.

Basic AWD - 4WD High Performance

​

In this case hydrostatic modulator acts as the hydrostatic pump where flow is proportional to rotational speed of green and red parts. If the control electro-valve is fully open oil will freely  circulate, inside the canalization of the hydrostatic modulators with low pressure i.e. practically 0% of the torque is transferred to the rear wheels. If control electro-valve is fully closed then there is no flow, read and green parts will rotate with same speed i.e. torque will be transferred 100% to the rear wheels.   Controlling opening of the control electro-valve it is possible to go from 0% to 100% of the torque transfer to the rear wheels in less than 0.05 s as the torque transfer is directly modulated by control electric valve.  Integration  of the hydrostatic modulator + differential is presented on the image below.
