VT-Hydrostatic Modulation

In first instance, as it is presented by the image below, it can be seen as replacement of the standard disc clutches, used at present, where discs are replaced by radial hydrostatic machines either piston based or vane based. In order to made straight forward comparison, piston needed to press discs in standard solution and distribution needed to commutate high pressure and low pressure oil, toward piston chamber * presented in figure above is omitted on figure below for clarity of the explanation of the differences.

Basic hydrostatic modulator module is presented on image below. It is characterized by two shaft's  that are colinear and ending at opposite sides of each other, As such they can be easily integrated into the drivelines. . One shaft , in this case red one, is connected to 'cup' cam and distributor so that they are rotating together..  Other shaft, in this case green is connected to the rotor with pistons. If oil flow is blocked those parts, green and red ones, will rotate with practically same speed. Inducing the flow, through the hydrostatic modulator, will induce speed difference between two shafts,

Standard clutches can only modulate torque by energy dissipation. This new 'clutch' in simpler variant, where pressure under piston is controlled by the control valve,  allows  torque modulation through energy dissipation just as standard clutches. Full potential of this new 'clutch' is achieved  when pressure, under piston is controlled by the control pump, meaning that torque is modulated by the control of the flow of energy and not energy dissipation.

 

Difference is clearly presented by the diagram below indicating that this 'new clutch' i.e. hydrostatic modulator, controlled by the flow control valve, can work in two quadrants as standard clutches allowing creation of the AWD4WD and/or CVT solutions with faster and more robust response. When it is controlled by the flow control pump it can work in four quadrants allowing realizations of the AWD4WD and/or CVT that are even more robust relating to overheating. In addition it allows creation of the mid hybrids, and advanced suspensions.
